If you are in a hurry and just want to find out what the winner is, then we recommend the Roomba 805.
When it comes to doing housework, nothing is more enjoyable than relaxing and having a robot do the work for you. I love to watch TV in another room when my Roomba is vacuuming, but I found out that not every model works this way. I decided to do a Roomba 805 vs 650 review to compare the two products.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Robot Vacuum
Before you jump into a buy, it is vital to make sure that you are considering the right features. Sometimes, you may feel like the only thing that matters is how well the vacuum cleans.
There are different aspects of the cleaning systems that you will need to think about as well. These include:
When you consider a vacuum that can navigate your home, the type of navigation system that you get is essential to consider. It will need to have smart sensors onboard that can detect the locations of all your furniture. A good system will even be able to tell you the location of the stairs. This can help to keep the vacuum from falling and getting damaged. When the position of something in the room changes, these sensors will help the robot’s navigation system adapt.
The Filtration System
Of course, vacuuming your living space will clear away the dirt and the debris that is on the floor. It will also help to clear away smaller particles that affect your breathing. Many times these particles are impossible to see because they are so small. Allergens often end up in the air that we breathe, which means that it will settle and create a layer on the floors. A good vacuum will have a filtration system that can remove most of the particles from the air. If you have allergies, then getting a HEPA filter is going to be a good idea. There are also other filtration systems that work, but they will not clear the allergens quite as well.
The Battery Life
When it comes to battery life, there are a few different options that vacuums of this type will use. I have found that the newer systems moved towards lithium-ion batteries. This will provide much more battery life per use and a longer lifespan. Ideally, you will need to find a system that lasts at least an hour before it needs to return to the charging cradle.

Features and Benefits: The Roomba 805
Let’s talk a little bit about the Roomba 805 to see how it stands up to the other iRobot products. It is a little noisy when compared to other models, but most people will not mind the sound that it creates. Some of the features that stand out the most include:
A Strong Cleaning System
I love how great this model is at keeping my home clean. It comes with a three-stage cleaning system that is very effective at pulling up dirt and debris. It can clean up about any size of dirt pile, especially since it has a design using the powerful AeroForce suction system. This system has five times the power of other robot vacuum systems. The side brushes even make it easier to clean the edges. It can switch between cleaning a carpet and a bare floor. In addition, the Roomba 805 has the option of virtual walls that you can switch on anytime you need. This model allows you to set two of these walls within your home.
A HEPA filter is a strong option to consider when you need to remove the allergens from your home. In fact, a filter of this type is capable of removing up to 99% of the dust particles that you’ll find while vacuuming the area. Anything that is larger than 10 microns will vacuum up into the filter so that it is no longer in the air. This will include pollen, pet dander, and dust mites as well as other allergens.
This unit has built-in sensors that allow it to navigate your home without bumping into furniture and other surfaces. It can help keep the vacuum from falling down the stairs and getting stuck in places where it doesn’t quite fit. If the Roomba does become stuck in an area of your house, it will send a notification that you will be able to hear from another room. This will allow you to pick it up and place it in a better location to continue cleaning. This unit uses an iAdapt navigation system that will make a note of when the objects in your home change locations. With that, it can clean the space with ease the next time without getting stuck. You can even schedule the vacuum to run up to seven times a week.
Since this is a large Roomba, you can expect the debris bin to hold quite a lot of material from your floors. Unfortunately, this is a smaller cup in this model, so you will have to empty it each time it docks to recharge. If you miss a time emptying the bin, it will need to be done again before it needs to return to its charging cradle.
Long-Lasting Battery Life
This is a Roomba model that runs on lithium-ion batteries. These are an option that will provide the unit with three times more life than other types of robotic vacuum cleaners. They will give you at least an hour or two of cleaning time before it needs to return to the docking station to recharge. These batteries also have much longer lifespans than other battery types, so you’ll replace them less often.
Features and Benefits: The Roomba 650
When it comes to the Roomba 650, it is an older machine. It still has many of the features that are important for cleaning your home. It may cost less than newer models because it has been on the market for so long. Some of the features and the benefits of this model include:
An Exceptional Cleaning System
This model has a three-stage cleaning system from iRobot that is present in all of their cleaning systems. It’s a very effective method of cleaning any type of floor that you need to vacuum. This system will agitate the carpet, brush up the dirt, and then suck up all of the debris. This will make the dirt smaller and more manageable when it’s time to vacuum the floor in your home. The unit will scan the floor up to 60 times a second so that it can locate the dirt in the space and find a path to clean it up.
This is a Roomba that uses its sensors to avoid bumping into furniture in the space. However, it doesn’t have a memory that will tell the robot the next time that it vacuums that it needs to avoid certain areas. This unit has a design with a single virtual wall that you can use to set a perimeter that is smaller than the room that the device is currently cleaning. If you need to make more barriers for the robot to follow, more can be purchased. Not only does this add more versatility with the vacuum, but it also makes it so that you don’t have to babysit it.
Dust Bins and Filtration System
This is a unit that has a small dust bin, so it will need cleaning on a regular basis. In addition, if you have allergens, this is a Roomba with a HEPA filter in its design. This type of filter will need to be cleaned after every vacuum as well. It’s simple to clean, and in most cases, it will only require a bit of hot water and a cloth to remove the dust from the filter. Compressed air can also help to remove the dust with a high degree of effectiveness. When the filter becomes too dirty, it is time to replace it. This unit does come with an additional filter, so you will want to change the HEPA filter at least once a year.
Simple to Use Scheduling Modes
The best part of any Roomba is the fact that you can schedule cleaning times ahead of time. This will allow you to schedule cleanings for the house up to seven times a week. If you want, it can even clean the space while you are at work or while you are sleeping at night. You can set the cleaning for a specific time on certain days of the week. I like to schedule my Roomba to clean while I am away, so I have it scheduled to clean Monday through Friday.
Battery Life and Self-Charging Abilities
When you have any Roomba, battery life needs to be more than adequate to clean your living space. Now, if you notice that the runtime of the vacuum is decreasing, you may need to get a new battery to replace the old one. This battery is a NiMH battery, so it is not going to last quite as long as a lithium-ion battery. It will provide you with up to 90 minutes of runtime with a single charge. Once it’s time to recharge the battery, it will return to the docking station to do so. In most situations, it will take about two to three hours of time. Any time that the vacuum has finished cleaning, it’s designed to return to the home base to recharge and prepare for the next cleaning session.
Customers Like These Products
For both of these products, there seems to be a large number of happy customers. When I scrubbed the net for reviews, most owners agreed that both of these adapt well. This means that if you have hardwood floors in one room and carpet in yet another room, both products should be able to keep up with the floor types. These have decent-sized dustbins, which means that there’s less of a need to keep up with the little robots. For both devices, most also agree that the robots do a good job at navigating cluttered environments. In addition, each product has a reputation for efficiency.
Roomba 805 vs 650: Final Thoughts
In my estimation, both of the devices offer a comparable level of quality, but despite this, one does edge out the other. As you might expect, the higher version number means more features, so the 805 is the winner of our little Roomba 805 vs 650 contest.
Simply put, it does a better job at remaining tangle-free when dealing with strings and loose hair. It also has a scheduling function that adds a ton of convenience to your daily cleaning. In addition, the Roomba 805 has a lithium-ion battery, which lasts much longer than the NiMH battery that’s in the Roomba 650.
