As a cleaning specialist for over 30 years, I am genuinely amazed by the things some of the most modern robot vacuum cleaners can do. However, I am also amazed at how expensive they can be. Luckily for some of us, there are high-quality robot vacuums out there that will not break the bank. Introducing the iRobot Roomba 680, a dependable, reliable and efficient device that can help you keep your home in tip-top shape without wasting time and energy. With all that in mind, throughout this iRobot Roomba 680 review, I will provide a thorough analysis of the product’s features and characteristics. Hopefully, this information will help you decide whether it’s right for your particular needs.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

Without a doubt, a robot vacuum cleaner can make your life a lot easier. The device moves around your home automatically, cleaning dirty areas as it does. Using features such as dirt detection capabilities and others, it can target specific areas that need cleaning while avoiding obstacles. As a result, this kind of device is perfect for people who enjoy keeping a clean home but don’t have time and energy to do it themselves every day. Before you buy one, however, there are certain things you absolutely need to know. Take into account the following:

Home Size

The first thing you should take into account is your home’s size. As you can probably imagine, the bigger your home is, the more work your robot vacuum cleaner will have to do. The more work it has to do, the more battery power the device will consume. For that reason, battery life is very important if you have a large home. On the other hand, if your house is small, you can use a compact model with satisfactory results.

Floor Type

Luckily, most modern robot vacuum cleaners are capable of dealing with all types of floors. However, some models have special features that make it more efficient than others on certain floor types, including carpeting. If your home is largely carpeted, it’s important to find a robot vacuum that has the mobility and suction capabilities required to work with that type of surface. This is particularly true when it comes to high-pile carpeting.

Allergy Management

If dust, pollen, and other particles are a problem for you, try to find a robot vacuum cleaner that was specially designed to deal with them. Apart from having effective dust loosening and sucking capabilities, the device should have a high-efficiency filter that can absorb and quarantine unwanted particles that are on the floor and in the air. Typically, filtered robot vacuums use HEPA filters to do this.

Control and Scheduling Options

Another important thing to look into before buying a robot vacuum is its control type. Older models tend to feature analog or digital built-in controls, typically consisting of a couple of buttons. Other, newer models include a remote control, often allowing additional options. Meanwhile, many of the newer models have WiFi connectivity features that allow you to control them (and schedule their functioning) through a dedicated smartphone app.

Features and Benefits of the iRobot Roomba 680

Roomba 680 Robot Vacuum with Manufacturer's Warranty

Having provided general information about this product, it’s time that I go deep into my analysis of the Roomba 680. If you are considering buying this product, take the following information into account:

Design

Featuring the circular design that iRobot products are known for, the Roomba 680 is capable of rotating in 360 degrees and moving in all directions. Additionally, due to its low profile, this device is capable of cleaning under furniture with ease. Simple and sleek, the 680 won’t look out of place in your home, no matter how elegant it is. In fact, the best compliment I can give it is that it will easily blend into your home, allowing you to forget completely about it as it does its job.

Performance

In terms of performance, the iRobot Roomba 680 truly excels. Making the most out of its three-stage cleaning system, the unit is capable of cleaning floors of all types, including carpeting. Simultaneously, two types of brushes and a powerful vacuum attack dirty spots, resulting in absolute efficiency. Even though it’s motor is not the most powerful out there, it produces enough suction to extract even the most difficult types of debris. This, combined with the aforementioned three-stage system, works marvelously well in both hardwood and carpeted floors.

Navigation and Maneuverability

Like all iRobot Roomba products, the 680 boasts great navigation and maneuverability capabilities. Despite having a somewhat outdated mapping system, the device is capable of recognizing its surroundings with fantastic efficiency. To avoid obstacles and falls, it uses several sensors. At the same time as they help avoid obstacles, these sensors detect dirt, allowing the device to work where it’s really needed. Additionally, the Roomba 680 includes drop sensors to avoid falls.

Usability

The iRobot Roomba 680 is many things but difficult to use is not one of them. Unfortunately, the unit does not feature any type of remote control, voice recognition or WiFi connectivity capabilities. As a result, it can’t be controlled remotely. Furthermore, it can’t be programmed or scheduled for functioning either. Instead, users will have to activate it manually whenever they want it to start cleaning.

To do this, you will have to push the buttons that are located on the superior part of the unit itself. While this can be kind of a hassle, it has the beauty of being simple and easy to do. With the push of a single button, you can tell the unit to start cleaning. It also includes a Spot Clean button that tells the robot to clean a specific area with complete thoroughness. A third button allows you to send the robot vacuum cleaner to its dock in order to recharge.

Accessories

Sadly, the iRobot Roomba does not offer a lot in terms of included accessories. Unlike other Roomba models, it does not even include a virtual wall barrier even though it is compatible with this type of technology. This is unfortunate as said virtual wall barriers are essential for delimiting the area of your home it is supposed to clean, preventing it from accessing different areas. At any rate, though, it is possible to purchase this and other accessories separately. Other accessories you can buy for this Roomba model include additional HEPA filters and replacement brushes.

Battery

Thankfully, the iRobot Roomba 680 is one of the first Roomba models that replaced nickel-metal batteries for lithium-ion ones. Without a doubt, this is a good thing as lithium-ion batteries have a longer lifespan and can be recharged more times than nickel-metal ones.

The iRobot Roomba 680 uses either a 2200 mAh or 2600mAh battery pack. As a result, it can clean for up to 60 minutes with a single charge. While this provides enough energy for cleaning small and medium-sized homes, it may be somewhat lacking when it comes to cleaning larger homes. Meanwhile, it’s recharge time is three hours, an industry average. At any rate, though, the battery performance is satisfactory considering the unit’s size. Considering the speed with which the Roomba 680 works, 60 minutes is often more than enough run time.
