When I first started shopping for a robotic vacuum, I was in way over my head. There are so many products to choose from, I wasn’t sure where to begin.
To help clarify things, I decided to start by looking at the Roomba brand.
To determine whether their 665 model is up to company standards, I’ve put together this list of iRobot Roomba 665 reviews.
Investing in an iRobot Roomba 665: What You Need To Know
If you’re looking for a robotic vacuum to help with the household chores, then there’s a good chance that you’re passingly familiar with the Roomba brand.
The iRobot company was founded in 1990, and has been making strides in the industry ever since.
A robotic vacuum can be a great addition to a busy household. The units operate at the push of a button, and require no outside interference as they go about their task.
Most are equipped with sensors that keep them from bumping repeatedly into walls or dropping down open stairwells.
Some models can even be operated remotely, with the help of a tablet or smartphone.
If you’re planning an extended vacation, a Roomba can be programmed to operate at the same time every day, leading to a truly hands-off experience.
Even if you’re at home the entire time, this pre-programming feature can be a tremendous asset.
Most of these machines are also much quieter than traditional vacuums, so you can go about the rest of your household tasks without interruption.
While these devices are undoubtedly convenient, they might not be the answer for everyone.
For one thing, they don’t perform well on deep-pile carpeting, so households outfitted with shag carpets will still need to be vacuumed by hand.
They’re also incapable of shifting floor clutter out of the way—a fact that’s lost on some consumers who expect the unit to clean under dropped toys or piles of dirty clothing.
Lastly, be aware that while iRobot is prohibited from sharing any information with outside parties, the devices will automatically gather data about your home unless you choose to disable this function.
The iRobot Roomba 665: What’s In The Box?
Here’s what you’ll get when you invest in the iRobot Roomba 665:
- Robotic vacuum device with three-stage cleaning ability
- Lithium ion battery
- Docking and recharging station with cord
- Virtual Wall Barrier
- Spare filter
- Spare set of brushes
This unit stands just 3.6 inches tall, which is slightly shorter than some comparable robotic vacuums. This is convenient, as it allows the vacuum to move easily beneath furniture and along sideboards.
However, the 665 is not as small as the Roomba 650, and it also carries a slightly higher price tag.
- Does a superb job with pet hair, especially on hard surfaces
- Suitable for daily use
- Comes with a generous set of spare accessories
- 12-month warranty on defective parts
- Not suitable for medium- to deep-pile carpets
- Occasionally has trouble finding its way back to the recharging dock
- Less effective when making the transition from tile to carpet
iRobot Roomba 665 Reviews: Features & Benefits
Unless you know specifically what you’re looking for in a robotic vacuum, it can be hard to narrow down your options.
In this section, I’ve composed a list of the features and benefits you should be on the lookout for as you begin your search.
How does the iRobot Roomba 665 rate in each category? Read on to find out.
Affordability and Value
This model is set in the low-to-average price range. Given the fact that its technology lags somewhat behind some of the newer competition, the price can be considered fair.
Bear in mind, though, that it’s still considerably pricier than some budget options. First-timers might do better to invest in a cheaper model first.
However, if you already own a robotic vacuum and are looking for a replacement at a modest price, the Roomba 665 could be the answer.
The iRobot Roomba 665 measures 17.8 inches in diameter, sits just 3.6 inches off the ground at its lowest setting, and weighs in at 11.45 pounds.
While the height control is impressive, the weight is slightly bulky for a unit of this size. It’s also wider than some of its closest competitors, so if you need a vacuum that can fit into a number of tight corners, this might not be the best choice.
The three-stage cleaning system on this model refers to the fact that it agitates and brushes the floors, in addition to merely sucking up debris.
While it does an excellent job on dust and pet hair, its suction is strong enough to pick up larger pieces, such as cereal or chopped vegetables.
Its efficiency gives the Roomba 665 a definite edge in this category, since many robotic vacuums balk when confronted with anything more substantial than a dust bunny.
The battery on the iRobot Roomba 665 allows it to run effectively for at least an hour. In my experience, it regularly returns to the recharging dock around the 60-minute mark. Since it takes nearly twice as long to fully recharge, this unit loses some significant points here.
There are plenty of comparable models that can run for 90 to 100 minutes without needing a recharge.
If you’re planning on covering a surface area larger than 1200 square feet, or if you use the device infrequently, then a different unit might better suit your needs.
This model is outfitted with an advanced filtration system that does a superb job at removing potential allergens, such as dander and dust mites, from your home.
As mentioned above, it’s particularly efficient when it comes to cleaning up pet hair.
There’s even a spare filter included in the purchase, so you won’t have to make a special trip to the store when the first one becomes too clogged for everyday use.
If this is the main reason for your investment in a robotic vacuum, then the iRobot Roomba 665 should have you covered.
As a general rule, this type of vacuum should generate no more noise than you would make when carrying on a normal conversation with another person.
To put this into perspective, that noise level is rated at around 60 decibels. The Roomba 665 has a noise level of 65 to 70 when operating on a bare floor, usually lowering to around 60 decibels when it moves to a carpeted area.
Since it also tends to perform more efficiently on hard surfaces, I wasn’t bothered by the extra noise, but it’s something to be aware of if there should happen to be any sleeping family members in the house.
In addition to its impressive three-stage cleaning operation, the iRobot Roomba 665 is equipped with navigation technology that allows it to find its way around your home without interference.
Its sensors can tell when the unit is navigating over hard or carpeted surfaces, and will adjust its height and cleaning technique accordingly.
It will also return automatically to its home port when the battery is running low.
Like most robotic vacuums, this one will turn and redirect itself when it encounters barriers like walls, or even potential hazards like open stairwells.
It can even be pre-programmed to operate at a certain time every day.
Unfortunately, however, it isn’t equipped with Wi-Fi capability, so any programming will have to be done manually.
Roomba offers a one-year warranty on all of its robotic vacuums, beginning with the date of purchase.
Keep your receipts on hand in case you run into any issues.
Be aware that the warranty only extends to defective parts, and won’t cover any problems that occur as a result of normal wear and tear.
The iRobot Roomba 665 loses some ground in this category.
While the technological specifications listed above are adequate for a unit in this price range, it doesn’t really go above and beyond when it comes to bonus features.
If you’re in the market for a robotic vacuum that can be controlled remotely, or one that will be compatible with your smart home technology (such as Alexa or Google Home), then you’re probably better off looking elsewhere.
- iAdapt Navigation uses sensors to navigate and adapt to your changing home; 3-Stage Cleaning System agitates, brushes and suctions floors
- Conveniently schedule cleaning up to 7x per week or just press "Clean" on the robot; Dual-Mode Virtual Wall Barrier
- Lithium Ion Battery delivers up to 3x the battery cycle lifetime; Automatically docks and recharges
- Avoids stairs and other drop-offs; Automatically adjusts to all floor types: carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate or other hard floors
- 3.6" low-profile design allows it to clean under furniture, beds and kickboards
Social Proof: Taking the iRobot Roomba 665 To the Floor
In my experience, iRobot Roomba 665 performs as advertised, offering buyers a fair value for the money spent.
The question is, do other consumers feel the same?
To find out the answer, I scoured the Web for reviews that mentioned this model in a positive light.
I wasn’t disappointed: The majority of users reported that the Roomba 665 works quickly and effectively on both carpeting and hardwood floors.
Households with more than one pet were particularly appreciative of the three-stage cleaning function.
Some buyers even claimed that the unit could run for 90 minutes before heading back to its home dock for recharging.
While this model performs well when it comes to certain tasks, it’s far from the only robotic vacuum on the market.
Given the sheer volume of options available, it’s perfectly understandable if you’d prefer to broaden your search.
For your convenience, I’ve provided a list of viable alternatives to the iRobot Roomba 665.
Be aware that when making direct comparisons between the products, I’ve awarded the advantage to smaller units rather than larger ones.
This affordable unit measures 2.6 inches tall, giving it an edge over the Roomba 665 when it comes to navigating beneath the furniture.
It also operates at just 55 decibels, making it one of the quietest robotic vacuums on the market.
